Poverty in Papua September 2014

The number of poor people in Papua in September 2014 to reach 864.11 thousand decreased 60.3 thousand persons compared to the poor people in March 2014, amounting to 924.41 thousand people.

By percentage, Poor residents in Papua during the past six months also fell by 2.25 percentage points, namely from 30.05 per cent in March 2014 to 27.80 percent in September 2014.

Judging by type of area, the poor are concentrated in rural areas. In September 2014 as many as 828.50 thousand people (35.87 percent) of the poor live in rural areas, while in urban areas only amounted to 35.61 thousand people (4.46 percent).

During the period March 2014 - September 2014, a decline in the number of poor people in rural areas amounted to 60.3 thousand people (-3.05 percent), the number of urban poor in absolute terms increased by 239 people, but in percentage decrease (-0.01 percent).

Poverty Line (PL) in urban areas in September 2014 amounted to Rp408.419, - higher than rural GK reach Rp340.846. This means that the cost to meet the needs of at least a decent living (basic needs) for food and non-food is greater in urban than in rural areas.

The role of food commodities to the GK is much greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health), which is 74.48 percent versus 25.52 percent.

Food commodities which have great impact on the urban GK is rice, cigarettes, cob / tuna / tuna, chicken, eggs and sugar. While commodity greatly affect rural GK is sweet potatoes, rice, cigarettes, cassava and pork.

In the period March 2014 - September 2014, Poverty Depth Index (P1) and Poverty Severity Index (P2) showed a declining trend. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tend to be closer to the line of poverty and inequality poor expenditure is also getting smaller.
