Abstract

Ø In May 2016, the two CPI cities in Papua Province recorded a change in the same index number, where Jayapura City experienced Inflation and Merauke also experienced Inflation. The city of Jayapura experienced inflation of 0.70 percent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) 125.55 and Merauke experienced inflation of 0.74 percent with CPI of 128.16.

Ø Out of 82 CPI cities, 67 cities experienced inflation (including Jayapura and Merauke cities) and 15 other cities experienced deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Pontianak at 1.67 percent and the lowest inflation occurred in Singaraja and Palangkaraya each at 0.02 percent. While the largest deflation occurred in Sorong by -0.92 percent and the smallest deflation occurred in Maumere by -0.01 percent. The city of Jayapura ranks 13th at the national level and fifth at the Sulampua level (Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua). While Merauke ranks 10th at the national level and fourth at the Sulampua level.

Ø Jayapura City's monthly inflation rate of 0.70 percent, higher than the national monthly inflation of 0.23 percent. While Merauke's monthly inflation rate is 0.74 percent, higher than the national inflation rate. The calendar year inflation rate (January - May 2016) in Jayapura City was 1.62 percent, higher than the national calendar year inflation of 0.40 percent. Whereas inflation for calendar year (January - May 2016) Merauke was -2.20 percent, lower than the national calendar year inflation rate. The year on year inflation rate (May 2016 to May 2015) Jayapura City was 4.23 percent, higher than the national year on year inflation rate of 3.32 percent. While Merauke's year on year inflation was 3.40 percent, higher than the national year on year inflation.

Inflation in the city of Jayapura in May 2016 occurred due to an increase in prices of goods and services as indicated by an increase in the index in the expenditure group: the foodstuffs 2.04 percent; transportation, communication and financial services 0.55 percent; clothing group 0.51 percent; health group 0.29 percent; the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group and the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group respectively by 0.02 percent and the education, recreation and sports group did not experience changes in the index figures. Inflation in Merauke in May 2016 occurred due to an increase in prices of goods and services as indicated by an increase in the index in the expenditure group: the transportation, communication and financial services group of 2.21 percent; clothing group 1.49 percent; foodstuffs 1.05 percent; health group 0.34 percent; processed foods, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group 0.20 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel 0.08 percent; and education, recreation and sports 0.05 percent.
